The 1967 Mustang came as a hardtop coupe, fastback, and convertible. Start with the shape and use you prefer, then compare the condition and complete cost of actual cars. Body style alone cannot tell you which one is the better purchase.
1967 Mustang body codes at a glance
| Body style | Body serial code | Common BODY entries | Include in the inspection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardtop coupe | 01 | 65A, 65B, 65C | Rear-window area, cowl, floors, doors, quarters, and underlying structure. |
| Fastback | 02 | 63A, 63B | Roof, rear-glass area, quarters, trunk, and underlying structure. |
| Convertible | 03 | 76A, 76B, 76C | Rockers, floors, top well, top mechanism, seals, and underlying structure. |
Ford’s 1967 vehicle identification reference, page 1-2, lists these codes. The serial code and longer BODY entry are different fields. Check the whole entry and its seat/trim application rather than treating the suffix as decoration.
How the choices change everyday ownership
Coupe: consider it if you want the hardtop shape and enclosed cabin. Compare the actual repair needs with other candidates; an inexpensive coupe can still need substantial work.
Fastback: choose it because you want that roofline, then decide what you are willing to pay for a particular car. Make roof, glass-channel, and body repairs part of the inspection.
Convertible: decide whether open-top driving fits how and where you will use the car. Include top operation, weather sealing, storage, and the condition of the structure in your plans.
Compare two real cars on the same basis
Write down each asking price, inspection findings, quoted immediate work, transport cost, missing pieces, and unresolved questions. If one car has an uncertain structural repair, leave that cost open until it is assessed. Do not give it a zero just to finish the comparison.

Distinguish the three body styles, body serial codes, and longer BODY entries.
- The code table cites the licensed 1967 Ford shop manual sample, vehicle identification page 1-2. The shorter serial code and the BODY field are different entries.
- The ownership and inspection notes are comparison prompts, not an assessment of a particular car.
